CASE STUDY OVERVIEW

Our team noticed frequent inefficiencies in navigating the current Eventbrite home page, which lacks readability and fails to categorize events in ways that cater to users.

We set goals to categorize events in a more systematic manner and to hierarchically display information on event cards.

Design Approach

WE DECOMPOSED THIS DESIGN BY FIRST ASKING

How might we help users find events that they want to attend faster on the home page?

Drawing inspiration from other algorithmic home pages, we aimed to rearrange categories for better user understanding. Event cards struggled to facilitate an information hierarchy, and organizer profile cards were ambiguous.

User Research

I needed to establish which categories users most wanted to see. In terms of event cards and organizer profile cards, I wanted to discover what event details and profile information, respectively, users found most important.

When browsing for events to attend (i.e. scrolling down the Eventbrite homepage), which of these categories would you want to appear first?

When learning about an event's details, which of these factors have the biggest impact on your decision to attend?

Lastly, I asked users to identify the purpose of certain icons. Responses allowed us to measure how representative particular icons were of their actual functions.

PROPOSED REDESIGN

EXISTING ICONS

*icons shown are modified representations of the actual icons used

What actions (i.e. like, dislike, save to wishlist, share, etc.) do you associate with the following icons on the event cards?

Participants erroneously identified the functions for 2 of 3 existing icons and correctly identified the functions for 3 of 3 redesigned icons.

Home Page Sequence

I relocated "My Tickets" and "Saved Events" to the drop-down profile menu for a more streamlined design, reordered event categories based on user data, and introduced color gradients to enhance contrast.

Event Card Information Flow

In order to increase readability on event cards, I reorganized event details so that features users deemed most impactful on their decision to attend appeared first. I added icons next to each line of text to help users separate event details, conveying information more quickly.

Functional Organizer Profiles

I integrated additional information on organizer profile cards, better engaging users and encouraging interaction with them. Categorical tags, as well as titles like "Top organizer," allow users to learn more about the organizer and their status.

What I Learned

Experience and Interface Design. I learned how to create dynamic designs that implement key findings from user research, best catering to user preferences.

Descriptive Iconography. Universal icons clearly represent their functions without the need for additional text.

Intentionality. I made purposeful design choices, with each change serving its own purpose to ultimately ease navigation and improve usability.
